that certain German firms, who formerly did business with the Far East, have now declared themselves as Italians.

301

Mr. 1. G. Torcester. This gentleman having been appointed liquidator of Messrs. Garrels Borner and Company, of which his brother-in-law Mr. C. Schroter was senior resident part- -ner, is now I am informed endeavouring to pick up the business formerly done by the German firm.

I would beg to remind you that Garrels Borner were successors to Mayer & Co., a German firm, who from many years did a large business throughout the last but who failed a few years ago.

J. H. Backhouse.

This gentleman, who is a British subject, was formerly in the employment of Messrs. Sander Wieler & Co., from whom he held a power to sign per procuration.

Mr. Backhouse has recently returned from Shan- -ghai and opened an export and import business here.

He has made an arrangement with Messrs.. Sander Wieler and Company of Shanghai to use their old trade marks in certain branches of his business.

The Holland China Trading Co. A neutral concern with very strong bias in favour of the Germans is also mentioned as helping the Alien Enemies in keeping alive their trade.

Mr. Grant who has been in Canton for some time, has now returned to the Colony and has established himself in business here. While this person cannot do much harm, I am given to understand he requires watching.

That the Germans should endeavour to do all possible to retain their trade is only natural and they are doing this by many different means. One which has recently bean reported is that large quantities of German manufactured goods are arriving in China, being shipped from Holland to Batavia and thence taken by the Java-China-Japan Line for distribution at the various ports. Much of this cargo would pass through Hongkong, but whether it is actually handled here has not yet been ascertained.

I regret having written at such a length but
